Living Unconsciously

As I sat for my haircut last evening,
I noticed bookshelves across from
Cassandra's station. I asked
About the new cabinetry. She said
Those shelves had been there
For months. I was reminded of Tolstoy,
Who, on cleaning his home
Could not recall whether he
Had already dusted his sofa.
He said, if we live life
"On the level of the unconscious,
It's as if this life
Had never been."
